Testimonials from past tour group members

I can't say enough about all the wonderful things you and Jim did for us. I was so worried about meals since my last experience was not that good on the food side and found that you and Jin had done a wonderful job looking after us. The Gourmet food was wonderful and the classrooms and information was great. You have done a great job.

Ron and I want to thank you for a great trip. We really appreciate your attention to detail, e.g., the wonderful classroom with many windows providing natural light, dutiful attendants (EGA should take note) waiting to address our smallest whim, the various special meals (e.g., Peking duck, hot pots, etc.), and the many bottles of water and coke provided on the bus and at meals; plus all the prior information that assisted us in our preparations for the trip, such as things to bring, what to expect, etc.

Please thank our embroidery teacher for the beautiful, double-sided embroidery project taught with such skill and patience. I felt I was there not only to learn the technique but also the teaching style.

My thanks also to Yang for the huge amount of effort required in preparing the curricula and materials for the classes on the various Miao embroidery techniques and in finding the artists/teachers to instruct us and the villages for us to visit to experience the differences in clothing designs and styles. It was an unforgettable experience, visiting and relating to the Miao people and their heritage.

Last, but not least, our thanks to Jin for his solutions to the intricacies involved in a complex itinerary, and for selecting the menu items for our lunches and dinners. It really was a gourmet experience. The meals were delicious, plentiful, varied and safe. All in all, it was a very special trip, well conceived and executed. Thank you for making it possible. I'm already envious of the people preparing for the next trip.

It was a dream trip for me after being away for 58 years. I can't wait to return again with Pat and Jin as my intrepid leaders.

Betty Chen Louis was born in Beijing, but grew up in the Guizhou Province of China after the Japanese invaded China. As a participant in Pat's tour, this was her first return to China in over 50 years.

I'm just now feeling "back to normal" after returning on February 9th from an "Embroidery Techniques and Classes Tour" of China hosted by Dalton Textile Tours. The tour was wonderful and, as I knew it would be, the highlight of the tour for me was taking classes from Chinese teachers in some of the embroidery techniques used by the Miao National Minority in Guizhou province. As is happening all over the world, young people are not learning the old embroidery techniques.  These classes help encourage the Miao to preserve their rich heritage of embroidery.

Our tour in China was broken up into two segment:  4 days in Beijing to take a class in double-sided embroidery and
8 days in Kaili, Guizhou for classes and touring. The double-sided embroidery class was an intense
3-day introduction to this exacting embroidery technique. I think the list that showed up on the white board on
the second day of classes should be every embroiderer's motto:
              Patience
              Attention to detail
              Love of the Art

After the stay in Beijing, we took an airplane ride to Guiyang, Guizhou and then a 3-hour bus ride on to Kaili.  Guizhou is one of the most remote provinces in China and it was the last one opened up to Westerners. So traveling there is still not easy. In Kaili, we learned 16 embroidery techniques in 4 class sessions and we traveled by bus out to Miao villages to see them wear their unique ethnic clothing, perform their music and dances, and see how they live.  And we had many opportunities to buy embroideries, textiles, and native jewelry.

All in all, an experience I will always treasure.

Pat Dalton has developed the tour of a lifetime for stitchers. Pat's Silk and Textile Tour of China has so much that is exciting, not only for stitchers but for anyone interested in China, a fascinating country. We visited extraordinary silk stitchers doing two sided embroideries as large as 8ftX10 ft, a silk museum, a silk factory, a brocade factory, as well as a jade factory, and pearl and cloisonné companies. We saw many marvelous pieces of embroidery as Pat knew the best embroidery shops and helped evaluate our choices for us.

We were exposed to China culturally with superb museums. We had a glimpse of historical China when we visited antique villages where tourists rarely go; the natives were very curious about us and very friendly. One of the most
impressive visits was to the pits of the Terra Cotta Warriors, where we had VIP viewing, thanks to Pat. We went to three shows; the most enchanting was at a preschool where the adorable little ones danced and sang for us.

Pat and her professional tour guides had arranged for us to visit really great restaurants with an amazing diversity of foods. Everyday was a new adventure!

Because of a favorable exchange rate, the shopping was wonderful-most of us had to buy an additional suitcase for our treasures. The most important treasures we brought home are the colorful memories of an exciting, complex, and beautiful China.

I really loved the trip and EVERYTHING went like clockwork...thanks to you and Jin.  No one could duplicate that itinerary for time, cost, or good meals and hotels, transportation, plus sites, in any other way but by going with you.  I have personally been telling the story everywhere I can.

Please keep me in mind for your 2004 "local" trip...as it enfolds.

By the way...the local guides were fabulous...each different and each warm and proud of their heritage...it gave me such a broad view of the diversity in china and of the progress...entrepreneurship and capitalism are alive and well in china...my first visits, like yours, were full of Mao suits and Iron Rice Bowl mentality!  (Note:  Carolyn had traveled to China previously on business but had not had any time for touring).

Seriously consider this trip! You won't regret a decision to go. A lot of thought has gone into the planning of this trip to make it a once-in-a-lifetime tour to China.  Accommodations are excellent and the meals are great.  All you have to think about is enjoying the wonderful sites, and especially seeing all the beautiful embroidery as well as the other arts of China.  Pat makes an effort above and beyond the call to see that everyone has an enjoyable time.

Pat,

Having just returned from 21 days on the Silk Road with Pat Dalton, I can say that it was the adventure of a lifetime. The theme of the tour was textiles and embroidery - and Pat clearly is expert -- but participants didn't have to be steeped in those subjects to enjoy the trip. I was particularly impressed with Pat's on-the-ground network of guides and Chinese friends. All were unfailingly informative, pleasant and professional. In a country where "relationships" are essential to getting things done, Pat enjoys friendships and relationships built over her 18 years of travel in China. This made for delightful visits with some of her friends. It also made logistics work smoothly - a huge statement, as anyone who has traveled abroad (much less, to the remote reaches of China!) can attest. Dalton's tour took us to exotic, remote places that would be extremely difficult to visit on one's own. The pace is grueling but totally do-able. You can sleep when you get home!

I just want to say what a wonderful Silk Road tour you planned.  As I probably won't get to China again and it was my first trip, I couldn't have asked for more.  We were very busy, and I was very tired each night, but the tiredness was worth it when I think of how much we accomplished.  And what a great decision you made when our hotel rooms were so luxurious which made for a really good night's sleep.

My interests were different from those who are interested in the fabrics and embroidery of China. But I found that I too became more interested and I think I'll at least start doing some beading when a class becomes available as I bought several beads and other items in the markets that I can take apart and use.

For me, the many cultures we saw and learned about was my peak experience.  It makes me want to read more about the minorities and their influence on China. I was not aware that such a small percentage of the population of China has such a great influence. It was good to know that the government of China is trying to preserve these groups. In fact, I'm very impressed with what I saw that the government is doing, especially in making tourism such a priority.  And, of course, our very special visit with Mr. He and purchasing his books added to my desire to know more about his Bai ethnic group.  And you , my friend, developed such a great tour and it cost us so little.  Carolyn and I had tea the other day and talked about the price of the tour, wondering how you were able to give us so much for so little.

Thanks again for our wonderful tour,

Pat,

It has been three months since we returned to Canada and we're already talking about when the next trip will be. Your China tour was an excellent introduction into a country that is filled with unlimited cultural experiences. The itinerary was tailored to all interests even though the focus was on the arts and crafts. Your choice of accommodation, restaurants, and guides was excellent. We have compared notes with friends who went on tours of China and the feedback is that we definitely received the best value for what we saw and did - and this was even after having to convert our Canadian dollars into US. We are normally independent travelers who are not prone to joining in with a group; however, your tour came with such a strong recommendation from a friend that we couldn't resist. Your web site was excellent in giving us the initial details and when we received your incredibly thick information package by mail, we were hooked. It is impressive to see how much personal attention you give to each participant. Thank you so much for a wonderful experience that will hopefully be the first of many in this fascinating country!

Dear Pat,

I have been reflecting on my tour of China, looking at the pictures, reading Mr. He's book and feeling so fortunate that I had the wisdom to select your tour for my China experience. Nothing could have prepared me for the depth of emotions I felt in every city, village and the people I encountered throughout our journey.

As I look at the faces of the elderly ladies and men and precious children we met in Dali and Kunming, my life has been enriched a thousand fold. I honor the Chinese people for their ability to have survived all the adversity they experienced during the rule of Mao Tse-Tung and Cultural Revolution.

When I compare what the American people have experienced in our 200-year history, I feel we have little to compare with the cultural life in China. I can praise your choice of cultural exposure in a thousand words. Your planning and in depth program of travel far surpasses any other tour I have taken since my first tour in 1984. Your attention to details and the ease with which we were able to process each part of the trip was exceptional. There was both planned itinerary and flexibility on every segment of the trip. I had thought walking on the Great Wall would be the highlight of my trip as that had been a lifetime dream.

Now, considering the overall journey, I find the trip to Lijiang and Dali, meeting Mr. He, meeting the people of Xizhou village and visiting the children's kindergarten, seeing Mr. Yang's bound foot slippers, and traveling the Wu Gorge and Yangtze River Gorge, barely opened my eyes to the diversity of the people of China.

When my mind has time to digest and formulate all my feelings about this wonderful experience, I will write you a full account. I am happy with my photos and the gifts I purchased.

You and your national guide, Jin Xu Tao made my experience of traveling in China the best trip a person could hope for. I hope we can find a way to bring him and his family to the USA for a visit.

Dear Pat,

Hats off to you for organizing such an enjoyable and comprehensive tour of China. We had been planning for some time to go this year (2002), so knew what we wanted to see. Your tour, with the emphasis on embroidery and textiles, added a dimension to the trip that we thoroughly enjoyed and would not otherwise have experienced. How lucky we were to see your ad in Needlepoint Now. Your web site and e-mail correspondence ensured us that we had made the best choice of a tour. Your expertise and Jin's guidance allowed us to enjoy every aspect of the trip. We'd rate the trip as strenuous in that we were kept very busy, but would not have wanted to miss one single place or adventure. Glad we did it while still in reasonably good physical shape. Thanks for introducing us to a greater variety of Chinese food than we had previously experienced. The occasional western dinners were a nice change and aptly timed. Yunnan province was not only beautiful but also visiting with the Bai and Naxi in their villages was fascinating. It is an area many more people will soon be visiting. We enjoyed meeting Mr. He at his Internet café. He is indeed a treasure! China now means so much more to us thanks to following your reading list and visiting the country. You run a great tour!

Dear Pat,
It's already been more than a month since we returned from our fabulous trip to China with you; it says something about the impressiveness of that experience that we 'still have China on our brains'! We find ourselves constantly talking about it, I suppose because of the deep and favorable impression it made on us. Having traveled in many parts of the former Soviet Union on five occasions (four times as a tour leader), to western Europe at least that often and recently to South America I can honestly say that our travel to China with you was one of the most memorable. You certainly deserve kudos for having arranged such a fascinating itinerary, and for having the kind of organizational skills that insures everything we expected, and more, came off without a hitch. I think the fact that you have an excellent and continuing relationship with Jin, our national guide, and the fact that your groups are much smaller than the usual China tours, contributed to the sense that everything was well planned. Well planned, yes, but not set in stone, so spontaneous changes were possible to meet fellow traveler's preferences. We have compared notes with friends who've visited China, and everyone turns slightly green when they hear about all the interesting and unusual places our tour included.

I also can't resist saying that when Thelma and I first discovered Dalton Textile Tours and began seriously comparing your tour with others, we of course were impressed by the fact that your costs per day were less than others (and you use five star hotels at most places!), and that your itinerary would take us to more places in China that could be characterized as 'off-the-beaten-path.' But, as a 'non-stitching man' I confess that I harbored a slight concern that the tour might emphasize textiles and embroidery so much as to lose my interest. On hindsight, though, I clearly recognize that neither I nor other men in our group ever felt that there was too much emphasis on embroidery and textiles. On the contrary, I felt that I learned a lot about this important art form in China, and developed a new appreciation for the exquisitely detailed needlework achieved by skilled artists/crafts people. The visits to the Textile Museum and to John Collin's workshop in Suzhou were truly eye-popping events. I didn't realize that a person such as myself, knowing nothing about the subject in advance, could develop a deep appreciation for these impressive works of art. I'll still probably not begin to fondle needles and thread, but I'm mighty glad I learned about the amazing double sided embroidery as well as other impressive Chinese textile art.

There is much more I could say, but to avoid exhausting you with my words I'll remark on just a few other things. I'm really glad we went to the minority areas of southwestern China (Yunnan Province), and especially that we got to see places such as Kunming, Dali and Lijiang! Not only did those places impress me with their outstanding natural beauty but we also had the opportunity to see the Bai, Naxi and Tibetan peoples. Meeting one of the Bai leaders, Mr. He LiYi, in Dali at his cross cultural cafe was a highlight! In response to my emails I have received return mail from this gentle and brave man (author of "Mr. China's Son: A Villager's Life") and expect to remain in contact with him for many years to come.

I also want to note how pleased both Thelma and I were to have such an interesting and comfortable cruise on the Yangtze River. It was a privilege to see the Three Gorges on the Yangtze as well as the gigantic Three Gorges Dam that will eventually flood the upstream gorges. We also will always remember the unusual adventure at Shennong Stream--being pulled through the sparklingly clear water by trackers heaving on ropes and skillfully using their poles.

Finally, I'll add that, of course, everyone who visits Xian wants to see the terra cotta soldiers, horses, etc.; we too looked forward to and were quite touched by what we saw there. But Thelma and I feel we had another very special and unexpected experience in the Xian area; thank you for having arranged a visit to the village where we met farmer (peasant) painters. Seeing and being able to purchase some of their simple but beautiful work was valuable in itself; but even better was the very human., heart-warming encounter we all had with the beautiful, curious and friendly children of that village.

In sum, our April, 2001 tour with you was truly unforgettable and we'd recommend it with enthusiasm to anyone who wants a China tour filled with adventure, people-to-people contact, and beautiful scenery.

Best wishes in your future travel plans.

Sincerely,

Bill Wiest

My husband and I and our son and daughter-in-law just returned from Pat Dalton's tour of China. It was a fantastic experience. The tour included all the "must-see" places on any Chinese itinerary: Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven in Beijing, the Terra Cotta Warriors in Xian, and a relaxing and visually fulfilling cruise through the Three Gorges of the Yangtze.

In addition we visited three small villages in southwestern China where we experienced life with various minority nationalities: the Bai, the Naxi, and the Tibetans. What a privilege to visit the famous Buddhist Temple identified as Shangri-La--where we met two Living Buddhas. We were also able to see first hand the life style of those living in rural China; the farmers who still work the land in the traditional manner. In Dali we had a most meaningful experience: we had dinner at the cafe of Mr. He Liyi, the author of Mr. China's Son--his compelling autobiography of his life under the Cultural Revolution.

What makes Pat's tours special is the occasional "textile" experiences. Textiles and embroidery are an integral part of the Chinese history and culture and so any China tour should include these, but Pat has contacts that are off the beaten tourist track--and are of special interest to the needleworker. At the same time, those on our tour who were not stitchers found these stops edifying, too. We visited a tie-dye factory, rug making, a silk mill, the Silk Embroidery Institute in Suzhou, and for me the highlight of the trip, a visit to John Collins workshop in Suzhou where gifted embroiderers produce some of the finest double sided embroideries available today.

Pat Dalton has devised a most gratifying China experience, with excellent Chinese guides, a variety of travel experiences, well planned menus with various Chinese specialties, and a stop at everything one would want to see in China.

Eleven years ago, when my husband and I visited China, we were shown all the tourist sights in Beijing, Xian and Shanghai as well as rug making, silk printing, jade carving and a cloisonné factory. However, I was very disappointed that we had not seen any of the needlework for which the Chinese are so famous.

Therefore, I was delighted when I learned that Pat Dalton was leading a needlework tour to China. I immediately signed up for the trip. It was especially exciting because the people on the trip love needlework and were very interested in seeing it done first hand. We visited the villages where they do the two-sided embroidery, a silk spinning mill and the Silk Museum. We literally watched over the shoulders of the needle workers and were able to purchase some of their exquisite works.

This was a wonderful trip with a very experienced leader who was able to take us to many fascinating needlework places in China that are never seen by the average tourist.

Before the trip, Pat provided travel tips and information about what we would see.

It was a truly specialized tour including many of the main sights and also the viewing of a variety of textiles (some of which are not usually seen by "tourists"). Pat's obvious enthusiasm about China and the Chinese people is contagious.

An unbelievable trip of memorable situations and people...incredible sights.

Thank you, Pat, for the trip of a lifetime.

Traveling to China is, truly, to go to the other side of the world! With Pat leading the way, it is a great adventure of a lifetime. Pat's knowledge of where to go and how to get there in addition to the services of our very special Chinese guides, provided us with a wonderful experience. We saw the cities, the countryside, the people, the history, the culture--everything! And with Pat's expertise in textiles, we were provided with the opportunity to view embroidered treasures of today and yesterday. All are beautiful beyond description! Don't miss the opportunity to travel with Pat to China--it's an experience that you'll treasure forever.

Just a note to tell you how much Liz and I enjoyed our trip to China with you and our small group. The trip far exceeded our expectations due to your careful planning and organizing and the exceptional quality of the guides you and Cai Jiannong of CITS put together. The extra week you and Cai organized for Liz and me to see Beijing with a private guide and driver was great and I think an exceptional value. The quality of the hotels and meals throughout the trip was excellent.

Being a male on the tour didn't bother me a bit and I found a broader range of things of special interest to me than I suspect most of the gals found. We will never forget the one on one conversations with guides, villagers in their homes, workers in the Embroidery Institute, and all the wonderful sights, sounds and tastes at our many, many places of interest you organized for us to visit. As you know we bought several pieces of precious needle art that we are anxiously waiting for the framer to return to us. They can be placed in special places in our home. Liz also bought a lot of silk material and is deep in the pattern selection process now and will be sewing up a storm shortly.

One of the two highlights of the trip for me was the Yangtze River Cruise through the Three Gorges and all the stops we made each day to visit local sights. The Lesser Three Gorges sanpan trip was exceptional. The other fascinating thing for me was the production of silk, from mulberry bush, to silk worm raising, to thread spinning, to dying, to hand weaving, to machine weaving into cloth, and of course the many styles of embroidery. As you know I was in China fifteen years ago on business, and this trip was wonderful in getting current with such intimate exposure to the real people and to touch and feel the tremendous cultural changes that have taken place since the death of Chairman Mao. The only way one could feel the real China like we did was to get into the back country like you and Cai organized for us. We both saw what all tourists should see but best of all we were allowed to rub shoulders with the real China of today and in the villages with the China of centuries past.

Both Liz and I agree that we'd like to go back again but only with your creative and organized tour. A real bargain! Thanks again and we look forward to hearing about new itineraries you might organize in the future.

Best regards,

I always wanted to go to China and am very interested in Chinese embroidery. Needless to say I am an avid needle worker.

So in April 1996, I went on a tour of China and Hong Kong which was geared to people interested in needlework. This tour was set up and conducted by Pat Dalton of Dalton Textile Tours. Pat is very knowledgeable not only of the embroidery of China but of the country itself. As a result, we saw not just embroidery, but we saw priceless embroidered imperial robes, a demonstration of how two-sided embroidery is done, a tour of a carpet factory, a cloisonné factory, a Jade factory and numerous museums.

The tour was not all embroidery work as we visited the Great Wall, the Ming Tombs, the Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses, numerous temples, etc. We also saw a great deal of the countryside and how the people lived.

The tour ended in Hong Kong where we visited the home of Pat's friend and viewed her collection of Chinese textiles.

I knew no one before embarking on this tour, first meeting the group in San Francisco. Everyone was very congenial and kind and I feel very blessed with the new friends I made.

I hope to visit China again sometime in the future and it will certainly be with Pat Dalton of Dalton Textile Tours.

My trip to China in 1996 with Pat Dalton was a trip above and beyond my wildest dreams. Pat's extensive knowledge of China is outstanding and she exhibited knowledge in planning and presenting this trip. This trip was a result of her love of China and the people of China, past and present with some textiles thrown in for those of us that are needle artists. We were able to experience a China that is going through a great deal of social and economic change and thanks to Pat, her explanations and descriptions we were able to experience and view first hand what life is like in present day China. As a needle artist I was able to experience the living history of treasures that China has to offer with their ancient history of art and textiles. I know that we touched just a small portion of that history but because of Pat's knowledge and this trip I have a wonderful new insight into an ancient tradition of textiles and art. For me the greatest experience of this trip was the trip to the Ming Tombs and seeing in their museum all the gold and silk treasures, especially the silk robe that was woven in the long length of silk cloth just waiting for the exquisite silk embroidery embellishment that we have come to associate with China. There are more than a lifetime of memories from this outstanding trip. Thank you Pat!

I had the delightful pleasure of being a participant of Patricia Dalton's Textile Tour to China and Hong Kong. It was a wonderful, informative, fun-filled experience. Pat's love and expansive knowledge of China, its culture, and plentiful arts will have you breathless. She has an incredible ability to conduct and guide such tours and does so with such tenderness and love. Pat will insure you leave for your adventure well-prepared and assist you each step of your travels. You'll see priceless treasures, visit China's famous historical sites, watch artisans create fabulous works of art and experience China's way of living.

I anticipate and look forward with excitement to another opportunity to visit China under Pat's guidance real soon.

A kaleidoscope of sensations is evoked in recalling my superb experience with Dalton Textile Tours: A small, very compatible group, extremely well organized travel arrangements made by Pat Dalton, knowledgeable Chinese guides with excellent English language skills (and a sense of humor!), great eating adventures...all combined to create a remarkably memorable trip.

What an adventure for me: To be in Hong Kong shortly before the changeover; to visit a private home on Victoria Peak overlooking the harbor to see antique embroideries and learn of their origin; to marvel at the double-sided embroideries (and shop) in Suzhou; to wonder at the excavation of the terra cotta warriors in Xian; and to hike a portion of the Great Wall. Incredible experience!

Joan Landt
Denver, CO

I found our tour guides excellent and the command of the English language very thorough during the trip.

We traveled by air, bus and train, with a barge trip thrown in and found everything very modern and up to date.

We reached our goal of a 'textile tour' with added highlights of the Great Wall, the Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses, Tiananmen Square, Temples, Palaces and the fantastic new museum in Shanghai. We found our last stop, Hong Kong a shoppers heaven.

Our accommodations were at a very high level and the meals the best of China

I conclude with the ending of a happy, tired but grateful traveler and would enjoy making a return adventure sometime.

Thank you Pat.
